Embracing distraction: the secret to productivity?
In my recent podcast episode, I opened up about my personal experiences with ADHD. It's been a journey of self-discovery, learning how to turn what many see as hurdles into stepping stones. I've developed some unique methods to work with, not against, my ADHD brain. Today, I want to share with you these techniques, which have significantly improved my daily life and work productivity.
Living with ADHD means constantly adapting to how my brain functions in different situations. Over time, I've identified certain strategies that help me manage my focus and energy better. These aren't just random tips; they're practices born out of real-life experiences and a deep understanding of how my ADHD mind works.
1. Body Doubling: My first technique, 'body doubling,' involves having someone else present while I work. This person acts as a sort of 'brain babysitter.' Their presence creates a subtle yet effective background buzz that keeps part of my brain engaged, allowing me to focus on the task at hand. It's a simple but incredibly effective way to manage distractions and maintain concentration.
2. Task Hopping: Then there's 'task hopping.' Contrary to popular belief, I don’t find it takes long to refocus after shifting tasks. When I sense my attention drifting, I switch to a different task. This keeps my workday dynamic and my brain engaged. It's about understanding the rhythm of my attention span and using it to my advantage.
3. Eat the Tadpoles: Small Steps Lead to Big Leaps Lastly, I embrace the concept of 'eating the tadpoles.' Rather than tackling the most daunting task first, I start with smaller, more manageable ones. This approach builds up momentum, dopamine and a sense of accomplishment, making larger tasks feel less overwhelming. It's about making progress in increments and using small successes to fuel larger ones.
These strategies have been a cornerstone in my journey with ADHD. They've helped me transform challenges into opportunities for growth and efficiency. I hope by sharing these, I can offer some guidance or ideas for others who might be navigating similar paths. Remember, what works for one person may not work for another, but the key is to find what resonates with you and your unique way of thinking.
